How to Store Rice Without Weevils: Simple Tips for Bengaluru Homes
Why rice gets weevils
Moisture, warmth and an open or dirty container are what weevils and mould like. Keeping the rice dry and sealed removes most of the risk.
6 steps that work
- Use an airtight, food-grade container. Transfer the rice from the bag once you open it.
- Make sure the container is completely dry and clean before filling it. Clean and dry it again before each refill.
- Store it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat and damp walls or floors.
- Add natural deterrents. Dried neem leaves, bay leaves or a few cloves in a cotton pouch. Replace every 2–3 months.
- Use a clean, dry scoop and close the lid after every use.
- Finish older stock first, and check regularly for moisture, unusual smell or pests.
