About Kitchen King® and Our Rice

Who is Kitchen King®?

Kitchen King® is the rice brand of Sri Balaji Rice Mill, Ballari, Karnataka. We have been milling rice since 1980 and sell aged, Sortex-cleaned Sona Masuri and Jeera Sona (Kolam) rice to homes in Bengaluru through kitchenkingrice.com and our Shanthinagar outlet.

Which rice varieties do you sell?

We sell these varieties:
• Sona Masuri Grand Old Raw Rice (18+ months old, November 2024 crop)
• Sona Masuri Old Raw Rice (9+ months old, November 2025 crop)
• Sona Masuri Old Ponni Steam Rice and New Ponni Steam Rice (9+ months old, November 2025 crop)
• Jeera Sona (Kolam) Grand Old Raw Rice (18+ months old, November 2024 crop)
• Jeera Sona (Kolam) Steam Rice (9+ months old, November 2025 crop)
• Sona Masuri Broken (Cut) Rice, raw and steam (9+ months old, November 2025 crop)

What is the difference between raw rice and steam rice?

Raw rice is milled directly from the paddy. It cooks soft and fluffy, and it suits everyday meals, lemon rice, curd rice and pongal. Steam (boiled) rice is parboiled before milling. It cooks firmer, keeps its grains separate, and is a favourite for daily South Indian meals.

What is the difference between Sona Masuri and Jeera Sona (Kolam)?

Sona Masuri is a light, aromatic, medium-grain rice. Jeera Sona (Kolam) is a slender, medium-sized grain that cooks soft and separate. Both are available in raw and steam varieties.

Why does the age of the rice matter?

Ageing dries the grain slowly, so it absorbs water well and cooks fluffy, separate and non-sticky. Our “Grand Old” rice is 18+ months old. Our other varieties are 9+ months old.

What is broken rice (nuchakki) used for?

Our Sona Masuri broken rice, called nuchakki (ನುಚ್ಚಕ್ಕಿ) in Kannada, is used for pongal, payasam, kanji, rice porridge and soft, quick-cooking meals. It is a budget-friendly choice.

Quality and Storage

How do you ensure the rice is clean and good quality?

Every batch is Sortex cleaned and hygienically packed. We also cook and check every batch before it is sent out. All our rice varieties have less than 1% broken grains.

How long does the rice stay good?

The best-before date is 2 years from packaging. Batch details are printed on the pack.

How should I store rice at home?

Keep it in a clean, completely dry, airtight food-grade container. Store it off the floor, in a cool, dry place away from the stove and moisture. Finish older rice before topping up with new.

How can I keep weevils away from rice naturally?

Put a small handful of fully dried neem leaves in a thin cotton cloth in the container. Bay leaves (tej patta), a few whole dried red chillies, or 5–6 cloves in a small pouch also help. Use only dried leaves, never fresh, because fresh leaves add moisture. Replace them every 2–3 months.

Cooking

How do I cook Kitchen King® rice perfectly?

Rinse the rice 2–3 times and soak it for 20 minutes. In a pressure cooker or electric cooker, use these water-to-rice ratios (the same cup for both):
• Jeera Sona: 2 cups of water to 1 cup of rice
• Sona Masuri: 3 cups of water to 1 cup of rice
The same ratios apply to the steam varieties. Let the rice rest for about 15 minutes before serving. Add a little more water for a softer texture.

Do I need to soak the rice?

Yes. Soaking for 20 minutes helps the grains cook evenly and gives a fluffier result.
