How to choose

  • Plain rice with dal, sambar or curry: Sona Masuri Grand Old Raw or Old Raw.
  • Firmer, separate grains that hold up well, and for immediate consumption: the steam varieties.
  • Slender/thinner and soft-cooking grain: Jeera Sona (Kolam / RNR).
  • Budget-friendly, porridge or kanji: broken (nuchakki) rice.

Our Jeera Sona is also known as Kolam / RNR rice. The same variety is sold in the market under common unregistered trade names such as “bullet rice”. We sell this variety (Jeera Sona) under our own registered brand, Kitchen King®.

Questions

What is the difference between raw and steam rice?

Steam (parboiled) rice is partly cooked in the husk before milling, so the grains cook firmer and stay separate. Raw rice cooks softer and fluffier.

Does aged rice cook better?

Aged rice (18+ months) cooks fluffy and non-sticky; our listings show the age of the rice currently offered.

How much water should I use?

A common starting point in a pressure or electric cooker is 3 cups water to 1 cup Sona Masuri, or 2 cups to 1 cup Jeera Sona. Soaking for 20 minutes helps.

Can I try before I buy?

Yes. Ask for a free sample pouch (about 200 g) at our Shanthinagar outlet in Bengaluru.
